Autumn Colors Express Railroad Days
(New Tour!)

Including Blennerhassett Island

Day 1

This morning we depart on our weekend trip to the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. We arrive in Hinton for the Railroad Days Festival. You’ll have time to visit the vendors and select your lunch from a variety of food options. Mid-afternoon we board the “Autumn Colors Express”. This special passenger train, pulled by Amtrak, is comprised entirely of privately-owned vintage rail cars from all over the nation. We travel aboard our luxurious private railcar taking in the views of West Virginia, traveling through the heart of the New River Gorge National Park at the peak of the fall foliage season. Our adventure ends in Charleston, West Virginia. Before we check in to our hotel we’ll enjoy a delightful dinner together. (D)
Day 2

It’s a short drive to Parkersburg, West Virginia where a fascinating and fun day is planned for you. We highlight the day with a visit to Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park. Blennerhassett Island’s antiquity spans back to the Ice Age hunters 13,000 years ago. Native American tribes lived on the island almost continuously, until white settlers began to flock to the area in the 1780s. Harman Blennerhassett, a wealthy Irish aristocrat, and his wife, Margaret, settled on the island in 1798 and began building a magnificent mansion and estate. The exquisite mansion accidentally burned to the ground in 1811, leaving little visible trace of its graceful, semicircular lines. However, modern archeologists rediscovered its foundations in 1973. Through a continuing program of careful historical and architectural research, the mansion has been recreated for visitors. The interior is furnished with some of the original pieces owned by the Blennerhassetts and other furnishings of the era. We take a 20 minute ride aboard the Island Belle Sternwheeler to the Island. Once on the island we visit the Mansion and you’ll have time to walk the grounds. Our horse drawn wagon ride will give you a chance to see and experience this historical by-gone area. Learn more about the area at The Blennerhassett Museum. You’ll see archeological and historical exhibits of the Blennerhassetts and the area, dating back to the 1700s. Watch a brief video of the island and see the famous Stahl Collection of prehistoric Indian artifacts. We check in to our hotel where you’ll have time to freshen up for the evening. We board the Valley Gem Sternwheeler for a relaxing Captain’s Dinner Cruise on the Ohio River. The evening features a delicious prime-rib buffet followed by our captain presenting stories of the river both historic and recent along with a time for questions and answers. (D)
Day 3

This morning we return to Charleston. The West Virginia State Museum traces the history of West Virginia. Visit the series of exhibits containing everything from an extensive collection of antique hats donated by a local school teacher to the telescope George Washington used to survey lands within the state. The Capitol Market offers a vast array of items from fresh produce to Fall pumpkins in this outdoor market. Stroll the market, marveling at the many specialty shops indoors, and take time to enjoy lunch at one of the eclectic lunch spots. Next we tour the quite unique J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works. They produce hand-harvested salt from a trapped ancient sea, deep under the Appalachian Mountains. This tour includes the history of the salt industry in the Kanawha Valley as well as a walk through the current solar powered process. End the tour with a taste of their unique salt and a chance to purchase some of their extraordinary products. We travel home with great memories of our time in West Virginia.
