Cass Railroad Fall Excursion and Blennerhassett Island

Day 1

TAMARACK • DICKINSON SALT WORKS • DINNER:

Today we travel into the mountains of West Virginia. We stop at Tamarack for lunch on our own and a chance to purchase handmade arts and crafts. We continue on through the capital city of Charleston and see the State Capitol Building. Just south of Charleston, we visit Dickinson Salt Works. See how they produce hand harvested salt and learn the history of the salt industry in the Kanawha Valley. We make our way to Parkersburg and check into our hotel, following an included dinner at an area restaurant. (D)
Day 2

BLENNERHASSETT MUSEUM • VALLEY GEM STERNWHEELER LUNCH CRUISE • BLENNERHASSETT ISLAND MANSION & TROLLEY TOUR:

We begin our day with a visit to the Blennerhassett Museum showcasing priceless historical relics and objects of art from the Ohio Valley's past. Next, we board the beautiful Valley Gem sternwheeler for a relaxing cruise on the Muskingum and Ohio Rivers with lunch served onboard. After lunch, we journey to Blennerhassett Island via sternwheeler riverboat from Point Park. This is an area of quiet natural beauty and is the scene of the alleged Burr-Blennerhassett plot. We'll discover the outcome of this shocking deed as we tour the restored mansion. A horse-drawn trolley will add an interesting view of this tiny island. We overnight in the Weston area. (L)
Day 3

GREEN BANK OBSERVATORY • CASS SCENIC RAILROAD BALD KNOB EXCURSION • LUNCH • BECKLEY:

Today we visit the Green Bank Science Center. It's the starting point of the Green Bank Observatory site. Explore the fascinating world of radio astronomy and learn about the world-class Green Bank Telescope as we tour the advanced research facility. Next we travel to Cass. The town remains relatively unchanged since its founding in 1901 by the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. We enjoy a 4.5-hour roundtrip train ride to the top of Bald Knob which should provide breathtaking views. You'll also enjoy a “King of the Road” hobo lunch while on board. We overnight in the Beckley area. (L)
Day 4

BIG WALKER COUNTRY STORE AND LOOKOUT • HOME:

Big Walker Lookout is the designated overlook of the Big Walker Mountain National Forest Scenic Byway. The view from the top of the 100-foot observation tower encompasses mountain peaks in five different states. Big Walker Lookout features a Country Store with handmade works by local artisans. You may want to purchase homemade ice cream, farm fresh fudge or delicious chocolates. We travel home reliving some of West Virginia's history and adventure.
