Washington D.C. - The Grand Tour

 
 
Day 1

MONTICELLO:

Join us as we embark on a special “Grand Tour” of Washington, DC. Today we visit Monticello, a showcase to the genius of Thomas Jefferson. You'll be amazed at the “modern” inventions Jefferson built into his home as early as 1810! From here we travel just outside of DC where our accommodations await us the next four nights.
Day 2

IWO JIMA • ARLINGTON CEMETERY • NATIONAL CATHEDRAL • MEMORIALS:

This morning we start the day by visiting the Iwo Jima Marine Corps Memorial before visiting Arlington Cemetery for a narrated tram tour. Here we see the grave of Robert Kennedy and the Eternal Flame at the gravesite of President John F. Kennedy. We'll witness the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We have an included lunch and rest before we continue our sightseeing. We drive down Embassy Row to see the many stately mansions now housing Washington D.C. - The Grand Tour Embassies from all over the world. Our next stop is the National Cathedral where we have a guided tour. Before going to our hotel we visit the Martin Luther King, Jr. and FDR Memorials. (L)
Day 3

SMITHSONIAN MUSEUMS • DINNER:

Today you may divide your time between the many buildings of the Smithsonian Institute depending on your interest. The museums of the National Mall area include: American History, Natural History, National Air and Space, American Indian, National Gallery of Art, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, African Art, Freer Gallery, and the Sackler Gallery of Asian Art. There are so many sights and other museums such as the Spy Museum and the Museum of the Bible within walking distance of the area. The day is yours to enjoy as you please. We dine together this evening at one of Washington's fine restaurants. (D)
Day 4

US CAPITOL VISITOR CENTER • HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM • DC SIGHTSEEING MEMORIALS AND MONUMENTS:

A short drive takes us back to our Nation's Capital. We have time for a photo stop at the White House before we visit the US Capitol Visitors Center. After lunch on your own at Union Station we visit the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. Next on our agenda is a stop at the WWII Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Korean War Memorial, and Jefferson Memorial. We have an included dinner this evening. (D)
Day 5

MT. VERNON • HOME:

We travel to Mt. Vernon, the restored house & farm of George Washington. George brought his bride here in 1759 and began his plan to become the leading scientific farmer in America. After lunch in the food court, we make our way home. (L)
