New Orleans Cajun Country and River Road

 
 
Day 1

ATLANTA • BARBER VINTAGE MOTORSPORTS MUSEUM • BIRMINGHAM:

We pass through Atlanta and before arriving in Birmingham where we visit the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum located on 740 acres. The park includes a world class 2.38 mile racetrack. The museum includes the world’s best motorcycle collection, with over 1200 vintage and modern motorcycles and race cars. It also houses the largest collection of Lotus cars, as well as other significant makes. The bikes range from 1902 to current-year production. Next, we arrive in Birmingham, a city once known as the “Pittsburgh of the South.”
Day 2

VICKSBURG • THE RIVER ROAD • NATCHEZ • DINNER:

Our travels today take us west out of Alabama. Shortly after crossing the line into Mississippi we reach Meridian, the home of the Singing Brakeman, Jimmie Rogers. Soon we come to Vicksburg, a sleepy river town that retains much of its antebellum charm. We come to the mighty Mississippi River then head south along the River Road, the path settlers and soldiers followed along the banks of the Mississippi. Soon we reach Natchez, a river town rich in history and culture. As we ride through town you’ll see many fine examples of graceful pre-Civil War homes. We take a tour of one of these lovely elaborate antebellum mansions. Tonight we experience the distinctive flavor of Natchez cooking at a popular southern restaurant. (D)
Day 3

FROGMORE PLANTATION • MUSICAL PERFORMANCE • DINNER:

Crossing into Louisiana, we stop at Frogmore Cotton Plantation & Gins. Here we join a guide and get insight into the contrasts between a cotton plantation of the early 1800’s and a modern cotton plantation and gin of today. We pass through Baton Rouge and on to Lafayette, the “Capitol of Acadiana,” in the very heart of Cajun Country. This afternoon we enjoy a musical presentation of Cajun music, and hear stories about the history and traditions of the “Louisiana French.” Tonight we enjoy an excellent meal at one of the city’s fine restaurants. Day 4

TABASCO SAUCE FACTORY • CAJUN SWAMP TOUR:

This morning we travel even deeper into Cajun Country! Our first stop is the Tabasco Sauce Factory on Avery Island, where we learn about the growing, crushing, aging and bottling process of this famous pepper sauce. We take time to shop for some of their fine products at the company gift shop located nearby. Later, our route will pass through New Iberia, Franklin, and Morgan City before reaching Cajun Country, where we take a real Louisiana Cajun swamp tour. We may see alligators and other bayou wildlife on this exciting tour. We travel to New Orleans for a two night stay. You will have the opportunity to get out and explore the city this evening.
Day 5

NEW ORLEANS TOUR • LUNCH AT COURT OF TWO SISTERS • MISSISSIPPI RIVER CRUISE • FRENCH QUARTER:

This morning we tour the grand city of the Bayou, New Orleans. Our knowledgeable local guide will help us understand how the Cajuns, Creoles, Spanish and French joined together to create the area’s truly unique culture. For lunch today we dine at one of New Orleans’ finest restaurants, The Court of Two Sisters. Relax and enjoy this elegant dining experience. This afternoon we take an old-time paddle wheel riverboat cruise. From the deck of the boat you will enjoy a spectacular view of the city. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore the shops at Riverwalk, the French Market, and perhaps try coffee and beignets at the Café Du Monde. (L)
Day 6

GULF COAST DRIVE • BILOXI • BELLINGRATH GARDENS:

Early today we depart New Orleans and travel along the picturesque Gulf Coast through Gulfport. We stop in Biloxi at the visitor’s center. The center houses a museum dedicated to the history of Biloxi and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This afternoon we visit beautiful Bellingrath Gardens, known as the Garden Spot of the South. The 800-acre estate consists of virgin forests and some 75 acres of planted gardens by the river. We spend our last night in Montgomery.
Day 7

LUNCH • HOME:

We drive by the capitol this morning before we head home. Near Atlanta we stop for a delicious lunch. What a way to end our tour down South. Afterwards we make our way home. What a time we have had in the Bayou Country! (L)
